The Samaritan Group Homeless Shelter
Pictures show Chestertown Church of the Nazarene set up and ready for the Shelter
Homelessness is difficult any time of year, but in the winter not having basic shelter and a warm and safe place to sleep is even more imperative.
Chestertown Church of the Nazarene, along with two other local churches, are partnered with "the Samaritan Group" to provide an Emergency Winter Shelter.
The Shelter is open for the month of January at the Church of the Nazarene and continues through the end of March at other church locations.
Samaritan Group provides not only emergency shelter for the unhoused but also works to provide other services to help get them in a more sustainable situation.
Shelter guests are referred by Kent County Department of Social Services and the Chestertown Police Department.
During the winter, Samaritan Group can serve 15 guests at a time. In 2018 and 2019, we hosted an average of 25 guests total, providing around 1,000 bed nights. Each year we also provide our guests with home cooked dinner together each night, along with to-go breakfasts, and bag lunches to take with them each day.
Efforts are made so that our guests can attend school and work, as well as have access to resources for other services.
The shelters are primarily staffed by volunteers.
Our Pastor, James Diggs, serves as the Director of the Shelter for the Samaritan Group, and also serves as the Board Chair.
